Acute and Critical Care

This is a high dependency unit which provides a level of care to the acute and critically sick between General Wards and Intensive Care Units. It is a step-down, progressive and intermediate care units. It’s a High Dependency Unit for people who need more intensive observation, treatment and nursing care than is possible in a general ward but slightly less than that given in intensive care units. Acute care and critical care differ in the types of patients and situations catered to. We focus on providing treatment for life-threatening injuries that require long-term stays in hospital. Our units seek to treat and care for patients with spinal cord damage, Orthopaedic cases, heart conditions, Kidney Failure, respiratory  ailure, organ failure, severe infections and life-threatening diseases or illnesses. Depending on the situation, some patients may stay in critical care units for longer duration to receive the recovery treatments they need to get better.

Our level of Care is categorized as below

Levels of critical care as defined.

Level  Definition

0  Patients whose needs can be met through normal ward care in an acute hospital.

1 Patients at risk of their condition deteriorating, or those recently relocated from higher levels of care, whose needs can be met on an acute ward with additional advice and support from the critical care team.

2 Patients requiring more detailed observation or intervention, including support for a single failing organ system or postoperative care and those ‘stepping down’ from higher levels of care.

3  Patients requiring advanced respiratory support alone or basic respiratory support together with support of at least two organ systems. This level includes all complex patients requiring support for multiorgan failure.
